Biography
Anja Nikolić is a Belgrade-born visual artist whose work explores the fluid boundaries between the virtual and the real. She holds a degree in Applied Painting from the Faculty of Applied Arts, University of Arts in Belgrade, and a Master's in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Contemporary Arts, completed in 2022. She has exhibited her work widely, with five solo exhibitions and numerous group shows across Serbia and the region.
Nikolić's practice is rooted in both traditional media - drawing, painting, collage - and contemporary approaches that include spatial and new media interventions. Her recent work focuses on the digital landscapes we inhabit, particularly those shaped by social media. Blending realistically rendered figures with curated visual elements sourced from Instagram profiles, she constructs virtual portraits and landscapes that mirror the layered, often fragmented nature of online identity.
Through these compositions, Nikolić investigates the tension between material reality and digital presence, revealing the emotional and psychological resonance of our curated selves. Her work suggests that while the digital realm may be intangible, its impact on our perception of self and others is deeply felt and constantly evolving.
As both a creator and participant in this interconnected digital world, Nikolić invites viewers to reflect on their own roles within it. Her art offers a space for quiet contemplation-on the beauty, absurdity, and complexity of a world where the virtual and the physical are no longer easily separated.
